This is our story…
“If only chicken had four legs, I could have 4 drumsticks at the same time” – Yes, this was my wish years ago. I was a meat-lover who loves the taste, the texture and everything about it, I could never imagine how anyone can live without meat, anyone but definitely not me.
My childhood was filled with the love of food as my mom is a great cook and she would offer us whatever we could afford at that time. Some of our relatives were living on the farm at the countryside and sometimes they would bring to the city live chicken, duck, fish, crab, even eel – you name it – whatever they could catch from their farms, rivers, lakes, ponds etc. Every time there was a family gathering, my mom would show me how she took the feather of the ducks, how to scale fish, how to hammer the head of the eel, and then how to season and cook them.
I used to ask my mom “why do these animals make noises or show distress when you try to prepare them for our food?”
She answered: “’coz they don’t want to be killed, but that is their purpose, they are here for us to eat, so they don’t have any choice. They are just animals”
Watching this since young, I thought it was normal. “They are just animals”
One day, my mom told me to try it out myself, she boiled hot water, and then asked me to dip the chicken inside the hot-water basin, and to start plucking the feather off. Before that she said “you need to cut the throat of the chicken first, and let the blood drain into the bowl. The chicken will die, then put the whole chicken into the hot water basin and pluck the feather. You are a girl, you need to know how to cook.”
Looking at the poor chicken lying there, I took the knife and somehow that moment I was very sad. I did not know why. Just something starts coming to me, I look at the chicken’s eyes, they also seem sad.
“Quick, I am holding the chicken’s neck for you” – my mom yelled.
I took all my courage and slice the skin of the chicken’s neck. But I did it so faintly that there is only a scratch, the chicken was in pain and started to flap the wings….and trying to run out of my mom’s tight hands.
“You’re useless, how are you gonna get married if you don’t know how to cook chicken”- she complained and took over the whole process.
I was traumatized because that was the very first time I did it myself, cutting the chicken’s neck. And I can really feel the connection between the chicken and me. “It is not just an animal”- I thought to myself- “It has feelings too, it knows pain, it is a being- just like me”. After that experience, I avoid our house’s kitchen all together. I am scared of seeing those eyes again.
Our journey begins…
Then I started the journey of learning more about animals, their roles in our life and I start questioning: “Do we really need to take their lives in order to live ours?”
It has been an eye-opening journey for me and I learned to be vegetarian for more than a decade and have been feeling stronger and stronger every day.
During this journey, I have met amazing vegetarian/vegan friends and even married to one . We decided to form a small community and build up a website to provide helpful and meaningful information for people like you, who may be thinking about switching over to a better diet or may just be curious about this lifestyle.
We notice that society nowadays has been placing so much importance on being “smarter and stronger”, and one of the ways is consuming more animal protein. Like during our childhood, our parents think we need to eat meat to be “smart”. IQ was something that in the past people associated with meat diet. We believe differently.
We believe that by considering the feelings for all other beings – humans and animals – we learn to be more compassionate, gentle and kind, we can thus live a much “smarter” and happier life. As we learn more from Dr. Daniel Goleman’s work on EQ (New York Times, 1995) and how it can solve many problems in the world, we decide to study further on this matter. As such we gather as much useful information as possible so it can serve you in improving your positivity, your feelings and your decision-making on your life journey.
We are also in the process of learning and improving ourselves daily, thus our blogs are here to serve three main purposes:
- Physically: to choose a better diet – for better health – we work with suppliers who care for the environment and ethics – thus our products include only pure vegetarian and vegan products.
- Emotionally: To be more aware of our feelings and others – become more considerate of others thus becoming more emotional intelligent (EQ).
- Spiritually: we love to share our views on how we all connect spiritually – we believe that we are together as one when we become more loving to all beings – not just human beings.
Our mission is to provide useful information and healthy products so you can start improving your current emotion, health and lifestyles. We would love to receive your kind feedbacks, or any questions you may have. We will be so delighted for you to join our EQlync family.
Thank you so much for being with us,
With lots of love and respect,
